At Wilkinson Cowan Partnership, we’re proud to support apprentices as they develop real skills and understanding of how a professional consultancy operates. This National Apprenticeship Week, we wanted to shine a light on the journey of our Business Administration Apprentice, Michael, who has shared his experience of learning and growing within the team.
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship with Wilkinson Cowan?
I chose to do an apprenticeship with Wilkinson Cowan because of the opportunities it offers alongside real, hands-on learning. From the start, it felt like a place where I could develop professionally while being supported by experienced colleagues. The atmosphere is welcoming, and it’s a genuinely nice environment to work in, which made it an easy decision for me.
What’s been the biggest highlight of your apprenticeship so far?
One of the biggest highlights of my apprenticeship has been travelling to Liverpool independently to attend the Master Your Networking Game 2.0 event. The experience helped build my confidence and pushed me outside my comfort zone by allowing me to attend a professional networking event on my own.
What does a typical day as an apprentice look like?
A typical day as an apprentice involves business administration tasks such as managing daily operations at the office, ordering office supplies, handling correspondence, organising files and documents and with a strong focus on the accounting side of the role such as tracking expenses and cash flow, processing invoices and payments and many more. This includes supporting the team with financial and administrative responsibilities while learning how the business operates day to day.
What’s the best advice you’ve received?
The best advice I’ve received has come from colleagues who were on a similar apprenticeship path. Hearing about their experiences and challenges reassured me that some things take time to fully understand, and that it’s always okay to ask for help when needed.
What skills have you developed so far?
During my time at Wilkinson Cowan, I’ve developed a wide range of skills essential to a business administrator role. These include organisational skills, communication, attention to detail, and confidence in handling responsibilities independently as well as technical skills.
What’s your favourite part of being part of the Wilkinson Cowan team?
My favourite part of being part of the Wilkinson Cowan team is learning from experienced colleagues and other professionals in the industry. The environment is supportive and social, and the team culture is great.
We’re incredibly proud of the progress Michael has made so far and his confidence and willingness to step outside his comfort zone reflect the values we strive to nurture at Wilkinson Cowan Partnership. We look forward to supporting his continued development!
